Chimi Lhakhang

Chimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist monastery located in the Punakha district of Bhutan. It is also known as the “Temple of Fertility” and is famous for its association with the legendary Buddhist monk, Drukpa Kunley, who was known for his unconventional teachings and behavior.

Legend has it that Drukpa Kunley, also known as the “Divine Madman,” subdued a demoness who was causing trouble in the area and established the Chimi Lhakhang temple in her honor. The temple is now a popular pilgrimage site for couples who wish to have children and is believed to have the power to bless them with fertility and childbirth.

The temple is located on a hill and can be reached by a short hike through beautiful rice fields and traditional Bhutanese villages. The temple complex consists of a main prayer hall, a chorten (stupa), and a collection of prayer flags and phallic symbols. The phallic symbols are said to represent the power of fertility and are a common sight in Bhutanese architecture and art.

Visitors to Chimi Lhakhang should dress modestly and remove their shoes before entering the temple. The temple is open year-round and visitors can receive a blessing from the resident monk, who will also provide visitors with a wooden phallus as a symbol of fertility.
