Lhakhang Nagpo

Lhakhang Nagpo is situated in Dumchoe village, a mere 15 minutes away from Lhakhang Karpo in Haa, Bhutan. It can be reached on foot within 15 minutes or a few minutes by car. This sacred temple holds a small lake within its premises, adding to its serene ambiance.

Lhakhang Nagpo serves as the abode for the guardian deity Da Do Chen. Despite its name meaning “black temple,” the walls of the temple are actually grey in color. It’s important to witness it firsthand to dispel any misconceptions about its appearance.

Inside the temple, the inner shrine houses an ancient statue of Jowo Sakyamuni adorned with a beautiful crown and precious jewels. In the outer chapel, you’ll find a shrine dedicated to the red-faced protector Drakdu Tsen, located beside a trapdoor leading to an underground pool inhabited by a tshomen, a mermaid spirit.

When exploring the temple grounds, keep an eye out for clay representations of the three sacred mountains of the valley, adding a touch of cultural significance to the surroundings. Visiting Lhakhang Nagpo provides an opportunity to witness these unique features and immerse oneself in the spiritual ambiance of the temple and its tranquil surroundings.
